PEOPLE MANAGER INTERVIEW PREP
Manager Interview Questions (First-Time and Experienced) with Tips
Manager interviews focus on how you lead people: setting goals, coaching, handling underperformance and making decisions.
How would you describe your management style? How do you handle an underperforming employee? Tell me about a conflict on your team. How do you delegate? Tell me about a difficult decision you made. How do you motivate a team?
1. How would you describe your management style?
Why they ask: Self-awareness.
How to answer:
Clear expectations and regular 1:1s. Coaching people rather than doing the work for them. Adapting to each person — with a short example.
2. How do you handle an underperforming employee?
Why they ask: Accountability with care.
How to answer:
Understand the cause first (skills, clarity, personal issues). Set clear expectations, support and a timeline. Document progress and follow through either way.
3. Tell me about a conflict on your team.
Why they ask: Conflict resolution.
How to answer:
Hear both sides separately, then together. Refocus on shared goals and agree on next steps. Check in afterwards.
4. How do you delegate?
Why they ask: Leverage.
How to answer:
Match tasks to strengths and growth goals. Define the outcome, not every step. Check in without micromanaging.
5. Tell me about a difficult decision you made.
Why they ask: Judgment.
How to answer:
The options and the data you used. Who you consulted. The outcome and what you learned.
6. How do you motivate a team?
Why they ask: Leadership.
How to answer:
Connect the work to a clear purpose. Recognise good work specifically and quickly. Remove blockers and create growth opportunities.
