BEHAVIORAL (ANY ROLE) INTERVIEW PREP
Behavioral Interview Questions with STAR Answer Examples
Behavioral questions ('Tell me about a time…') appear in almost every interview. Use the STAR method — Situation, Task, Action, Result — and keep each answer to about two minutes.
Tell me about yourself. Tell me about a difficult problem you solved. Describe a conflict with a coworker and how you resolved it. Tell me about a mistake you made. Why do you want to work here? What is your greatest weakness? Tell me about a time you worked under a tight deadline. Where do you see yourself in five years?
1. Tell me about yourself.
Why they ask: The opener; sets the tone for the whole interview.
How to answer:
Present: your current role and strongest skills. Past: one or two experiences that led here. Future: why this role is the next step. Keep it under 90 seconds.
2. Tell me about a difficult problem you solved.
Why they ask: Problem-solving and ownership.
How to answer:
Situation and why it was hard. Your specific actions, not the team's. The result, ideally with a number. What you learned.
3. Describe a conflict with a coworker and how you resolved it.
Why they ask: Emotional intelligence and professionalism.
How to answer:
Keep it neutral; no blaming. Show how you listened and found common ground. Positive outcome for the work and the relationship.
4. Tell me about a mistake you made.
Why they ask: Honesty and growth.
How to answer:
A real but recoverable mistake. How you owned it and fixed it quickly. What you changed so it would not happen again.
5. Why do you want to work here?
Why they ask: Motivation and research.
How to answer:
Something specific about the company: product, mission, tech, customers. How your skills match what they need. What you want to learn there.
6. What is your greatest weakness?
Why they ask: Self-awareness.
How to answer:
A real weakness that is not a core requirement of the role. Concrete steps you are taking to improve. Evidence of progress.
7. Tell me about a time you worked under a tight deadline.
Why they ask: Prioritisation and composure.
How to answer:
What was at stake. How you prioritised and communicated. The outcome and any trade-offs you made.
8. Where do you see yourself in five years?
Why they ask: Ambition and fit.
How to answer:
Growth in skills and responsibility that this role supports. Keep it realistic and connected to the company.
