IT SUPPORT / HELP DESK INTERVIEW PREP
IT Support and Help Desk Interview Questions with Answer Tips
Help desk interviews look for a logical troubleshooting method, solid Windows/Active Directory basics and calm, friendly customer service.
A user cannot connect to the internet. What do you check? How do you reset a password in Active Directory and unlock an account? How do you handle an angry user? Three tickets arrive at once. How do you prioritise? What is DNS and how would you troubleshoot it? Tell me about a time you explained something technical to a non-technical user. How do you document your work? Why do you want to work in IT support?
1. A user cannot connect to the internet. What do you check?
Why they ask: Tests a basic, ordered troubleshooting method.
How to answer:
Is it one user or many? Wired or Wi-Fi? Physical: cable, Wi-Fi connected, adapter enabled. ipconfig: valid IP or 169.254 (DHCP issue); ping gateway, ping 8.8.8.8, nslookup a name. Escalate with your findings if it is beyond your scope.
2. How do you reset a password in Active Directory and unlock an account?
Why they ask: Daily task in most help desk roles.
How to answer:
Verify the user's identity per policy first. ADUC: reset password, require change at next logon, unlock account. Mention self-service password reset as a better long-term fix.
3. How do you handle an angry user?
Why they ask: Customer service under pressure.
How to answer:
Listen fully and acknowledge the impact. Set clear expectations and next steps. Follow up when you said you would.
4. Three tickets arrive at once. How do you prioritise?
Why they ask: Judgment about business impact.
How to answer:
Impact and urgency (how many users, business-critical?). Follow SLAs and the escalation matrix. Communicate ETAs to the ones you are not working on.
5. What is DNS and how would you troubleshoot it?
Why they ask: One of the most common root causes of issues.
How to answer:
DNS maps names to IPs. nslookup/dig, check the configured DNS servers, flush the cache (ipconfig /flushdns). Compare results from different DNS servers.
6. Tell me about a time you explained something technical to a non-technical user.
Why they ask: Communication skills.
How to answer:
Use an analogy, avoid jargon, confirm understanding. Share the outcome — fewer repeat tickets, for example.
7. How do you document your work?
Why they ask: Ticket quality affects the whole team.
How to answer:
Clear ticket notes: symptoms, steps taken, resolution. Turn repeat fixes into knowledge-base articles.
8. Why do you want to work in IT support?
Why they ask: Motivation and fit.
How to answer:
Genuine interest in helping people and solving problems. Mention what you are learning (certifications, home lab). Connect it to where you want to grow.
