PRODUCT MANAGER INTERVIEW PREP
Product Manager Interview Questions and How to Answer Them
PM interviews test product sense, prioritisation, metrics and influence without authority. Structure your thinking out loud.
How would you improve a product you use every day? How do you prioritise a backlog? A key metric dropped 10% this week. What do you do? Tell me about a product you launched. How do you handle engineering pushback? How do you decide what not to build?
1. How would you improve a product you use every day?
Why they ask: Product sense.
How to answer:
Pick a user segment and their real pain point. Propose 2–3 solutions and choose one with reasoning. Define how you would measure success.
2. How do you prioritise a backlog?
Why they ask: Decision-making.
How to answer:
Tie items to goals; use a framework like RICE or impact vs effort. Balance customer requests, tech debt and strategy. Communicate the trade-offs clearly.
3. A key metric dropped 10% this week. What do you do?
Why they ask: Analytical thinking.
How to answer:
Check data quality first. Segment by platform, region, user type, recent releases. Form hypotheses, validate, act.
4. Tell me about a product you launched.
Why they ask: Execution and impact.
How to answer:
The problem and target users. Your role across discovery, build and launch. Results with numbers and what you learned.
5. How do you handle engineering pushback?
Why they ask: Influence and collaboration.
How to answer:
Understand their concerns (effort, risk, tech debt). Share the customer evidence. Find a scoped version or phased plan together.
6. How do you decide what not to build?
Why they ask: Strategic focus.
How to answer:
Say no when it does not serve the goal or the target user. Explain the opportunity cost and keep a visible parking lot.
