1. Walk me through your month-end close process.
Why they ask: Process discipline.
How to answer:
Reconciliations, accruals and prepaids, journal entries, review, reporting. The checklist or calendar you use to hit deadlines. One improvement you made to speed it up.
2. How do you handle a reconciliation that does not balance?
Why they ask: Problem-solving.
How to answer:
Check timing differences, duplicates, missing entries and transposed numbers. Document what you found and post the correcting entry. Fix the root cause so it does not repeat.
3. Explain accrual vs cash accounting.
Why they ask: Fundamentals.
How to answer:
Accrual records revenue and expenses when earned or incurred; cash records them when money moves. Accrual matches income and costs to the right period, which is why GAAP requires it for most companies.
4. What Excel skills do you use daily?
Why they ask: Tools.
How to answer:
Lookups (XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP/INDEX-MATCH), pivot tables, SUMIFS. Any automation: Power Query, macros, templates you built.
5. Tell me about a process you improved.
Why they ask: Initiative.
How to answer:
The inefficiency or error you noticed. What you changed and who you worked with. Time saved or errors reduced, with a number if possible.
6. How do you explain financial results to a non-finance manager?
Why they ask: Communication.
How to answer:
Start with what it means for their team or decision. Use few numbers, plain words and one simple chart. Offer the detail if they want it.
