FINANCIAL ANALYST INTERVIEW PREP
Financial Analyst Interview Questions with Answer Tips
Financial analyst interviews test modelling, forecasting and turning numbers into recommendations.
Walk me through the three financial statements. How would you build a revenue forecast? Explain a variance you investigated. How do you value a company? What do you do when the data is incomplete? Tell me about a recommendation that changed a decision.
1. Walk me through the three financial statements.
Why they ask: Fundamentals.
How to answer:
Income statement (performance), balance sheet (position), cash flow (cash movement). Net income flows into retained earnings and the start of the cash flow statement. Changes in working capital and capex connect the balance sheet and cash flow.
2. How would you build a revenue forecast?
Why they ask: Modelling approach.
How to answer:
Choose drivers: volume × price, or customers × revenue per customer. Base assumptions on history and market data. Show base, upside and downside scenarios.
3. Explain a variance you investigated.
Why they ask: Analytical depth.
How to answer:
Budget vs actual and the size of the gap. The drivers you found (price, volume, mix, timing). The recommendation and what changed.
4. How do you value a company?
Why they ask: Valuation knowledge.
How to answer:
DCF: project cash flows and discount them. Comparable companies and precedent transactions. Say when each is most reliable.
5. What do you do when the data is incomplete?
Why they ask: Judgment.
How to answer:
State your assumptions clearly. Use ranges and sensitivity analysis. Flag the risk to decision-makers.
6. Tell me about a recommendation that changed a decision.
Why they ask: Impact.
How to answer:
The business question. Your analysis and recommendation. The outcome, with numbers if you can.
