CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT (CNA) INTERVIEW PREP
CNA Interview Questions and How to Answer Them
CNA interviews look for compassion, reliability and safe, respectful patient care. Short real examples from clinicals or past jobs work well.
Why do you want to be a CNA? How do you protect a patient's dignity during personal care? A resident refuses care. What do you do? What would you do if you noticed a change in a resident's condition? How do you handle a heavy workload on a short-staffed shift? How do you deal with a difficult family member?
1. Why do you want to be a CNA?
Why they ask: Motivation and staying power.
How to answer:
A genuine reason — someone you cared for, or why you like hands-on care. Your goals, such as becoming an LPN or RN.
2. How do you protect a patient's dignity during personal care?
Why they ask: Respect is central to the role.
How to answer:
Explain what you are doing, close curtains and doors, keep them covered. Let them do what they can for themselves. Speak to them as an adult, never about them.
3. A resident refuses care. What do you do?
Why they ask: Patient rights and judgment.
How to answer:
Stay calm and ask why — they may be in pain, scared or embarrassed. Try again later or offer choices. Report the refusal to the nurse and document it.
4. What would you do if you noticed a change in a resident's condition?
Why they ask: Safety and observation.
How to answer:
Report it to the nurse right away — new confusion, breathing changes, skin issues, falls. Give a short example of something you noticed and reported.
5. How do you handle a heavy workload on a short-staffed shift?
Why they ask: Prioritisation.
How to answer:
Safety needs first, then scheduled care. Work with your team and ask for help early. Never skip safety steps to save time.
6. How do you deal with a difficult family member?
Why they ask: Communication.
How to answer:
Listen and stay polite. Answer what you can and refer clinical questions to the nurse.
