Pharmacy Technician Interview Questions and Answer Tips
Pharmacy tech interviews focus on accuracy, attention to detail, customer service and working fast without mistakes.
How do you ensure accuracy when filling prescriptions? A customer is upset that their prescription is not ready. What do you do? How do you handle a busy shift with a long queue? What do you know about insurance claims and rejections? Why do you want to be a pharmacy technician? Tell me about a mistake you caught.
1. How do you ensure accuracy when filling prescriptions?
Why they ask: Errors can harm patients.
How to answer:
Check drug, strength, dosage form, quantity and patient every time. Use barcode scanning and never skip verification steps when busy. Ask the pharmacist whenever anything looks unusual.
2. A customer is upset that their prescription is not ready. What do you do?
Why they ask: Customer service under pressure.
How to answer:
Apologise and explain the reason simply (insurance, stock, pharmacist review). Give a realistic time and offer to call or text when ready. Escalate to the pharmacist if there is a clinical concern.
3. How do you handle a busy shift with a long queue?
Why they ask: Workflow and prioritisation.
How to answer:
Prioritise urgent and waiting prescriptions. Keep customers updated so they do not feel ignored. Accuracy comes before speed — say that clearly.
4. What do you know about insurance claims and rejections?
Why they ask: Much of the job is insurance troubleshooting.
How to answer:
Common rejections: refill too soon, prior authorisation needed, not covered. Explain how you resolve them: contact the prescriber, check alternatives, inform the patient.
5. Why do you want to be a pharmacy technician?
Why they ask: Motivation and commitment.
How to answer:
Interest in medications and helping patients. Your goals: certification (CPhT), specialisation or further study.
6. Tell me about a mistake you caught.
Why they ask: Attention to detail.
How to answer:
What you noticed and why it looked wrong. How you escalated it and the outcome. What it taught you.
