ELECTRICAL ENGINEER INTERVIEW PREP
Electrical Engineer Interview Questions and Answer Tips
Electrical engineering interviews test fundamentals, troubleshooting and safe design practices.
Explain Ohm's law and how you use it. How do you troubleshoot a circuit that is not working? Tell me about a project you designed. What standards and safety practices do you follow? Which tools and software do you use? How do you explain a technical issue to non-engineers?
1. Explain Ohm's law and how you use it.
Why they ask: Fundamentals.
How to answer:
V = I × R. Practical uses: sizing resistors and conductors, finding faults.
2. How do you troubleshoot a circuit that is not working?
Why they ask: Method.
How to answer:
Check power and grounds first. Measure step by step and isolate sections. Compare against the schematic and expected values.
3. Tell me about a project you designed.
Why they ask: Experience.
How to answer:
The requirements and constraints. Key design choices and the trade-offs. How you tested it and the outcome.
4. What standards and safety practices do you follow?
Why they ask: Safety.
How to answer:
Relevant codes and standards (NEC, IEC, IEEE). Lockout/tagout and design margins.
5. Which tools and software do you use?
Why they ask: Tools.
How to answer:
Oscilloscopes, multimeters, power analysers. SPICE, PCB design or power-system software.
6. How do you explain a technical issue to non-engineers?
Why they ask: Communication.
How to answer:
Use simple analogies. Focus on impact, risk and the decision needed.
