MECHANICAL ENGINEER INTERVIEW PREP
Mechanical Engineer Interview Questions with Answer Tips
Mechanical engineering interviews mix fundamentals with design projects. Explain your decisions and trade-offs.
Walk me through a design project. How do you choose a material? What CAD and analysis tools do you use? How do you handle a design that fails testing? Explain GD&T and why it matters. Tell me about working with manufacturing.
1. Walk me through a design project.
Why they ask: Design process.
How to answer:
Requirements and constraints. Concepts considered and why you chose one. Analysis, prototype, testing and the final result.
2. How do you choose a material?
Why they ask: Fundamentals.
How to answer:
Strength, stiffness and weight. Cost, manufacturability and environment (temperature, corrosion).
3. What CAD and analysis tools do you use?
Why they ask: Tools.
How to answer:
SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo, AutoCAD, FEA or CFD tools. A specific example of how you used them.
4. How do you handle a design that fails testing?
Why they ask: Problem-solving.
How to answer:
Root cause analysis before changing anything. Iterate the design and re-test. Document the lesson.
5. Explain GD&T and why it matters.
Why they ask: Manufacturing awareness.
How to answer:
It defines the allowable variation in form, size and position. It makes sure parts fit and function when made by different suppliers.
6. Tell me about working with manufacturing.
Why they ask: Collaboration.
How to answer:
Design for manufacturability from the start. Feedback loops with the shop floor or suppliers.
